Wiggly Bridge Bottled in Bond Review
First in full disclosure, this is my local distillery and I am friends with the owner David. Trevor, David and I took a Bourbon Stewards class together and he has been a gracious tour guide several times in the past.
Wiggly Bridge gets its name from the world’s shortest suspension bridge in York, Maine the bridge was aptly name by a group of girl scouts in the 40’s as they bounced across. As for the distillery the story goes that it all started as a family joke between David and his son, also David, that they should just make their own whisky. So as any good Mainers would do they bought the material and taught themselves how to make a 750 gallon copper pot still.
Wiggly Bridge makes three Whiskys: a White Whisky (not aged), a Small Batch Bourbon aged 4 years in small barrels, and the one I’m drinking tonight the Bottle and Bond 5 year 100 proof.
Wiggly Bridge Bottled in Bond by The Numbers
- Cost: $75.00 at the distillery
- Made: Wiggly Bridge in York, Maine
- Proof: 50 proof (100%ABV)
- Mashbill: 57% Corn, 38% Rye, 5% Malted Barley
- Age: 5 Years
- Barrels: 53 Gallons #3 Charred New Oak.
- Color: A medium a deep coppery amber.
Nose: A pleasant pipe tobacco, with a light sweet vanilla. A bit of barrel char and hints of leather.
Taste: The high rye bill shows up in the taste. It’s spicy with deep black pepper on the tongue, mid pallet vanilla and brown sugar shows up with some cinnamon. It’s lighter and thinner on the tongue but has an overall great mouth feel.
Finish: It has a long rich finish, with rich leather, dry and lingering.
Maine’s climate does something to whisky as it ages, I don’t know if it’s the long cold winters or simply the closeness to the ocean, but it creates great whisky, and Wiggly Bridge has definitely learned how to coax all the flavor possible out of it. I really do enjoy this whisky, and it’s made even better by the fact it’s local and made by good people.
Cheers,
Dan
