Russell's Reserve 6 Year Old Rye Review

In the course of attending classes for Whiskey University I've begun to build a greater appreciation for the dry, spicy flavors of a good rye whiskey, so while preparing for a recent Wild Turkey tasting class I was happy to pick this bottle up at my local liquor store.

Wild Turkey is known for making "barely rye" rye whiskeys that contain just enough rye to meet the legal definition of a rye (51%) and this Russell's Reserve pick is no exception to that rule.   As a result, it has a flavor profile that is milder and sweeter than most ryes while also being drier and lighter than the average bourbon.  I can't deny that I was in love with this one from the first sip because of those attributes.

Russell's Reserve 6 Year Rye Tasting Notes

I sipped this one neat from a Glencairn glass. At 90 proof it does not have an overwhelming ethanol burn on either the nose or the palate and is quite easy to sip.

Mash Bill: 51% Rye, 37% Corn, 12% Malted Barley

Color: Medium Amber

Nose: Vanilla, citrus, and hay with a hint of black pepper.

Palate: Sweet front end with hints of caramel and vanilla, followed by lemon zest and a gradually building black pepper back end.

Finish: Lingering notes of black pepper and lemon zest with a mild Kentucky Hug.

Should You Pick Up a Russell's Reserve Rye?

I would pick this one up if you're a bourbon drinker that is just beginning to explore the rye flavor profile.  It's barely rye mash bill makes it an excellent bridge between a high rye bourbon and more traditional ryes.  If you are an experienced rye drinker who prefers a drier, more peppery sip this may not be your favorite bottle, but I suspect you'll still enjoy it and it will be a great one to share with bourbon drinking friends.
