George Remus Single Barrel Select
George Remus Single Barrel Select
Part 1 The Bourbon:
I often start my reviews with some history and commentary but George Remus is such a colorful character I’m going to actually do a two part review first the bourbon and then some history about the man himself.
George Remus Single Barrel is a high rye bourbon distilled by MGP in Lawrenceburg, IN. Most MGP distillate is sold to other non distiller producers and bottled, labeled and sold under their names. Remus however is bottled and marketed by MGP itself as a house brand.
The Remus straight bourbon single barrel select program started in early 2021. The process allows a group or person to buy an entire barrel. The distillery helps you sample several barrels, and then you choose the one that you feel has the best flavor. Once you pick the barrel, they bottle it, label it, and ship the barrel (in some cases) as well as all the filled bottles to your local liquor store. You can then official go buy it.
The challenge is that every barrel is slightly different. The person that picked your barrel might not have the same likes and preferences as you. This means that occasionally you get a bottle that you don’t like.
My bottle came from a friend in Kansas and was picked by the Air Capital Barrel Society which did a fantastic job in both their barrel pick and in the custom back label for the bottle. This barrel has great flavor and is well balanced. Here are my tasting note:
George Remus Single Barrel- Straight Bourbon Whiskey
Proof: 115.1
Nose: You get the high rye nose right up front followed closely by notes of caramel, vanilla, a little pine and leather
Taste: pepper, oak char, brown sugar, with a pleasant alcohol burn. Dry and tannic mouth feel.
Finish: Long and peppery, continued char and a cinnamon finish.
Finally: This was a great club pick, and I hope to get to try other picks in the future. A huge thank you to Jason Grimm for helping me find this bottle.
